I was born with one eye closed.photo of Ava with one eye open

My Mom remembers how I stared up at her with just one eye open for the first little piece of my life. Both eyes physically opened soon after that, and I didn’t think about my closed eye much until a year ago.

It was at a conference that I had the opportunity to reconnect with my birth story and share it with a partner. I told the woman across from me that I was born with only one eye open.

She looked at me, very gently, and asked:

“What if you open both eyes now?”

I was brought to tears right there.

In that moment, I realized that I had been viewing the whole world from just one perspective, just one point of view, just one eye, for all of my life. Mostly I saw that things were a struggle and it took hard work to achieve our dreams. I saw “not enough,” especially not enough money. I saw people working long hours and not getting anywhere. I saw many businesses struggling.

Though I was a very happy person, I was blind to a lot of the wealth available in this world.

Since the day she asked me that question, I have been opening my other eye. I’m seeing new experiences and opportunities that I didn’t see before.

~ Even before a problem or struggle shows up, there is an answer.

~ Business success does not require the conditions and hurdles that we think it requires. You don’t need to work yourself to the bone. It doesn’t matter how old you are. You don’t have to do things the same way that everyone else does.

~ We can do what we love, have fun, and that’s when new clients and opportunities show up.

~ Other people are wishing for a person just like you to enter their lives, and you will fulfill that wish.

~ We can shift the world around us by changing our internal world. Objects and people will come into our experience if we give our attention to them. Things will disappear when we don’t react to them anymore.

~ We can tap into wealth at any moment. It’s what I feel when I dress up for lunch and eat at my bistro table with Italian music, or French café tunes playing in the background. It’s a state of being that we can access instantly.

Before leaving the conference, I wrote a note to remind myself of what was possible beyond the partial-blindness:

“You only have one eye open, so right now, you’re only seeing one half of the situation. When you’re ready to see what’s possible, just open the other eye. It’s all ok. You’re not blind. It’s just that you’re not looking at all of the amazing things that are possible. When you’re ready to see the wonder of this world, just open your other eye.

It’s time to move forward with two eyes wide open.
