Several years ago, I read a suggestion in a book about taking one day each week to cleanse or fast. It’s an opportunity to rest from heavy foods, avoid gluten, sugar, and dairy, and also drink more liquids. I imagine how happy our bodies would be if we gave them a 24 hour rest from digesting each week. Not everyone is ready to commit to 1 day a week of fasting, so I began to think about other opportunities to give the body an opportunity to expel toxins and do some internal cleanup.

How about turning your travel experience into something worthwhile? On your next flight, try going on a “Sky Cleanse.” Quite often, eating in airports is done out of boredom. Did you really need to eat those tacos at 1am before your overnight flight? Did you buy coffee at Starbucks because of thirst or because of the fun factor? I know that when I’m waiting for my plane, I often munch on snacks without being very hungry, and iced tea tempts me each time.

In the next week, I am embarking upon a cleanse, and this time, I’m doing it for personal development, much more than I am for my internal organs. I’m looking for clarity of mind. Yes, I do want to physically clear out the burdens of food from my body, but my focus is to open up intuitive and spiritual channels for myself.

Cleansing does not mean that you have to stop eating. My own cleanses include fresh juice, herbal mixtures, and occasionally fresh fruits and vegetables. You can choose to keep just liquids in your own Sky Cleanse, which means that you can still grab a complimentary drink on the flight. I often choose the tomato juice, unsweetened apple juice, or sparkling water with a wedge of lime. Corn syrup from soda definitely won’t support a short cleanse.

Saying no to food at the airport or on the plane does mean that you’ll have to find other ways to keep yourself occupied, especially if you’ve got several hours to wait. Bring a book, your journal, or a project from work that truly inspires you!

Your Assignment:

Consider giving your body a rest from heavy foods the next time you fly. You could even do a “car cleanse” during one day of your next road trip.
