Are your feet as sad as mine are right now? After 3 weeks of travel, carrying heavy bags, scratching my ankles, being stepped on in subway trains, and walking for hours on dirty sidewalks, my feet need some extra care. There is a pedicure shop in the Newark airport, and they may have a new customer on Friday. Until then, I’ll be looking after my feet on my own.
Here are a few ways that you can care for the feet that hold you up every day:
1. Smother your feet in garlic
This sounds crazy, right? But garlic helps to fight bacterial infections, enhances the immune system and it also fights viruses. Crush a few fresh cloves and then apply the paste on your feet. Cover up with socks for the night, and let this amazing food do the work while you sleep. Garlic is also great for the lungs, so this remedy may help you if you’ve had a cough or congestion.
2. Change your shoes frequently
I brought 4 pairs of shoes on this trip, and have worn at least 2 different pairs each day. By alternating shoes, you’ll be less likely to develop blisters in places where your shoes rub. As your chiropractor will tell you, high heels are not very good, and the relief of a pair of flat sandals is delicious!
3. If you have a blister, use these herbs to speed healing:
Apply tea tree oil blended with olive oil to the blistered area, and if the sore is open, an ointment made with the calendula flower or aloe vera can help. Crush dandelion leaves or use the dandelion juice on the blister to speed healing. Plantain, a green plant found in many Washington State yards, can be crushed and also applied to the spot.
4. Give yourself a foot rub or soak
When you’re in the shower or the bath, take a few extra minutes to clean your feet and give them a rub at the same time. Soaking your feet in warm water and Epsom Salts (magnesium sulfate) helps to relieve muscle and joint pain, and these salts also have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
