Let’s take a minute to talk about the energetic and practical differences between high-income months and low-income months. I’ve definitely felt each of these during my nearly 7 years as an entrepreneur. The first time I signed on $17,000 of new business in one month felt quite different than the month when I had sucked my bank account dry and was freaking out because I had less than a dollar.
Here are a few patterns I see business owners experience during low-income months vs. high-income months:
~ You feel sorry for yourself, and feel stuck in a fog.
~ You think that your industry as a whole is struggling, and you believe that there isn’t enough to go around.
~ You keep telling yourself how much you suck, and how you aren’t good enough.
~ You’re on Craigslist or LinkedIn several times a day, searching for job opportunities. What you’re really doing is entertaining your “plan B” business exit strategy.
~ Your inner turmoil has caused you to neglect your body. Maybe you’re not eating often enough. You might be having a restless sleep.
~ You haven’t been asking potential clients to work with you.
~ You feel pretty hopeless about your current state of income, and aren’t sure how to pull yourself out of it.
A high-income month:
~ You’re out having plenty of conversations with new people. These conversations are general networking conversations – they don’t necessarily need to be sales conversations, though they could turn into that.
~ You’re teaching classes and giving presentations, and connecting with potential clients every time that you do.
~ You feel committed, excited, and passionate about your work.
~ You have something that you can sell at a higher price-point, which means that even one sale will be enough to comfortably hold you until the next sale.
~ You’re being smart about selling to the people/businesses/companies/customers who have the budget to pay you. You are committed to finding and working with the clients who have money, or who are willing to find that money.
~ You trust that you will be taken care of.
~ You wake up with a sense of calm, because you know that you’re supported.
~ You’re also really good at activating your internal power, and creating feelings of focus, energy, and devotion around your work.
