Last year, I was at a clothing store, shopping for new shirts for the summertime. When it was time to try them on, I walked to the back, and waited my turn with a group of several other women who were also in line for the dressing room.
As I stood there, I could see my reflection in the mirror in front of us, along with the reflections of the ladies waiting with me. All of them were about a foot shorter than I was, and with this contrast, I saw my own height (nearly 5 feet, 8 inches) in a way that I hadn’t ever seen it before.
As I stared at my reflection, a thought raced through my mind:
“You have a body built for hosting a television show! You’re almost as tall as Padma on Top Chef.”
It was a scary and thrilling thought all at once, because it was the first time I saw how the build of my own body might actually be a clue as to what I would do next in my business. While I had no ambitions to be a television host, I did want to speak in front of larger audiences, and use my voice as a tool to share my message. That’s what many television hosts do.
My “television host” body type was giving me clues about my future, and I listened. Just a few months later, I had my first keynote speech, followed by a half page photo published in the Pasadena Weekly paper, in California. Toward the end of the year, I was given the opportunity to speak on stage about my business, and people from countries all over the world were asking to work with me.
The moment where I came face to face with a “television host” in the dressing room happened a while ago. I never talked about it publicly until now. The reason I held back was out of concern that some people would think I was bragging about my own body, but I’m going to trust that you’re open to hearing this story, and will use it as an example for yourself. Please also know that I am not trying to uphold a stereotype that television hosts have to be really tall, since all bodies are welcomed in this world.
Let’s wonder what was your own body was built for.
Please go look in the mirror.
Is your body one of a personal trainer?
Will your powerful stance position you on stage as an inspirational speaker?
Are you a chef, or a builder?
Are you built with yoga teacher muscles?
Is your soothing voice meant to be heard around the world?
Maybe you’ve come to a stumbling block around what you should be sharing through your business. Maybe you are not making enough money, your marketing message is fuzzy, or you don’t know what products and services to sell. If this is happening, take a look at your body, and wonder what it was built for. It can give you clues about your next steps as an entrepreneur. Once you discover those clues, you’ll know what kind of business guidance and support to seek out next.
I believe that we came into this world with skills and a body to take us through our particular human journey. Your own body has prepared you for an amazing path, and it holds a few clues for you, if you are willing to look at it and accept it.
